The school is well-disciplined, hardworking and friendly.

In order to achieve this environment, we believe very strongly in having good, sound policies in place so that teachers, students and parents know exactly what is expected of them.

This section covers:

  • Behaviour
  • School Sanctions
  • Absence & Holidays
  • Governing Body Policy Statement on Curriculum
  • LEA Curriculum Statement
  • Work Related Learning
  • Freedom of Information

BEHAVIOUR

We believe that high standards of behaviour are important for our school to run smoothly and safely and for the benefit of all members. Our good reputation hinges on maintaining the rules of the school and we expect our students to abide by them and for parents to support us in our endeavours in this.

Our school rules require the following from pupils:

  1. To arrive punctually for the morning and afternoon sessions and to attend all lessons on time.
  2. To attend wearing correct school uniform.
  3. To leave at home any item that might be a danger or hindrance to self or fellow pupils. Large sums of money or valuable items, if they must be brought to school, should be left with the school office for safekeeping. Forbidden items brought to school will normally be confiscated for a prescribed period and dangerous items, eg cigarettes and matches, will not be returned to pupils but to parents, if they so request.
  4. To control their language and adopt the highest standards of courtesy.
  5. To eat all food within the dining room or prescribed area.
  6. To eat sweets only at breaktimes in the playground and in areas designated for wet weather.
  7. To attend all lessons with the necessary books, pens, pencils, clothing and other equipment, taking proper care of these.
  8. To remain on the school site throughout the school day, unless they go home for lunch. (Any authorised departure from the site, which has been properly requested and approved by a member of staff, must be recorded in the "signing-out" book held in the school office.)
  9. To complete and present all homework as required.
  10. To move quietly at all times, keeping to the left on corridors and stairs.
  11. To observe the highest standards of behavior during the journey to and from school - in the case of cyclists, observe the Highway Code and dismount on the school site.
  12. To maintain the highest respect for all people and property at all times.

IF STUDENTS BREAK THE RULES, THEY MUST ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES.

SCHOOL SANCTIONS

Where a verbal reprimand proves insufficient, misconduct may be dealt with in a number of ways, including:

  1. a further verbal reprimand;
  2. an imposition to be completed at home;
  3. some form of service to the school;
  4. detention of one hour's duration or a series of detentions (parents will be notified in writing twenty-four hours before the detention is due to take place);
  5. a letter home with a request for an interview.

Very serious cases of misconduct are dealt with by the headmaster and the deputy headteachers. In rare cases, parents may be required to keep their child at home for a specified period. The help of external supporting services, including governors, may be sought. In such cases, a meeting with parents will be arranged.

ABSENCE AND HOLIDAYS

Any absence must be explained, on return to school, by a brief letter from the parents to the student's tutor. We would, for the sake of your child's education, encourage you to avoid taking holidays during term time. For those families where this is unavoidable there is a form available from the school, which should be completed and returned to the school at least two weeks before the holiday commences.

MEDICAL TREATMENT

The school has a nurse in attendance. Any medicines to be administered should be given to the nurse for safekeeping and she will dispense them at the appropriate time.

LUNCHTIME ARRANGEMENTS

A cafeteria lunch system operates, where pupils can choose from a variety of options. Each item is individually priced and students pay for what they have chosen. Students who bring packed lunches use the Primmer dining hall facilities. We expect all students to stay on the campus at lunchtime, whenever possible, unless parents make a written request to Mr Green, Deputy Head.

PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION

All parents are automatically members of the association. There is a committee which meets several times a year in order to raise funds to enhance school facilities and also to discuss with the headmaster matters relating to the school and its development. The committee is always keen to recruit members; therefore, if you are interested, please contact the school office.

FIRE

Regular fire practice drills are carried out and students are required to know and obey the instructions displayed in all rooms.

GOVERNING BODY POLICY STATEMENT ON THE CURRICULUM

In Great Baddow High School, every student is entitled to a curriculum that is rich and varied, challenging and inspiring, enabling every individual to fulfil her or his potential to the highest possible standard.

In order to achieve this goal, we intend for every student to have access to an entitlement curriculum; a curriculum which is broad and balanced and which is differentiated in each area, so that all students feel they are able to cope with the work and achieve attainable targets.

As a school, we will continually keep the curriculum under review. A school development plan will follow a three-year cycle, which will include evaluation in order that the next plan can build upon earlier work. The school will also follow a programme of departmental review, which will generate constructive advice and planning in order that all curriculum areas can develop in a way that will raise standards and achievement.

THE LEA CURRICULUM STATEMENT

A copy of the LEA's Policy Statement on the secular curriculum can be obtained from the school on request.

WORK RELATED LEARNING

Work Related Learning has been around for a number of years and is an excellent way to gain practical and valued work experience and lifeskills throughout Years 10 and 11.

The programme combines school study of the core curriculum (Maths, English, Science, ICT and PE) alongside the ASDAN Preparation for Work course. Students attend school two days to study these subjects and have the option of spending another day at either Chelmsford or Writtle College studying NVQs in catering, hairdressing, motor vehicle maintenance, engineering, brickwork, painting and decorating, child care, etc. The remaining days are used for work experience with a local employer.

Students can opt for any career of their choosing so long as a suitable placement can be found. This is done in one of two ways, either using Trident's database or by finding your own placement. This will open a lot of pathways and put the students in an excellent position to gain employment or to use their experience for further NVQ studies, or both even, by gaining a day release apprenticeship with an employer.

Other advantages are that the class sizes are much smaller than that of a normal GCSE class, which means that students benefit from more one-to-one teaching, that can only enhance their learning. Also, the team of staff teaching work related are totally dedicated and focused towards helping the students to build a career for themselves for when they leave school.

The school currently enjoys a successful Work Related Course with the students working in areas such as mechanics, catering, the retail industry, construction, hairdressing, etc. Many students have gained holiday and weekend employment from this experience but, more importantly, some have been given full time employment when leaving school in Year 11.

If you would like further information regarding rhe Work Related programme, please contact Mr Darren Hand at the school and he will happily answer your questions.
