Students
Sixth Form
The sixth form offers a wide range of courses for students wishing to continue their full-time education beyond the age of 16. Students must:
- genuinely wish to continue with full-time education;
- have shown signs that remaining at school after 16 would be beneficial;
- agree with the school staff on a suitable course of study;
- have passed a minimum of six GCSEs at C grade and two GCSEs at B grade to enter an A level course and, generally, an A* - C grade in each subject they wish to study.
The sixth form curriculum meets the needs of all students looking to continue their full-time education. The following subjects are currently available for examination at GCE advanced level (A) and advanced supplementary level (AS):
- art

The sixth form prepares students for careers at 17 and 18 and for entry to universities and other specialised colleges of higher education. In recent years many students have gained entry to higher education, including the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge and Veterinary Colleges, to read for degrees and diplomas in a wide range of subjects. Most sixth form students are involved in the community service programme, while the sixth form council offers opportunities for involvement in social and cultural activities.
Full details of the sixth form are provided in the brochure that is presented to year 11 students during the autumn term. A series of parents’ meetings, combined with individual interviews, prepares students for entry to the sixth form.
Monitoring, assessing and recording progress
In all courses, students' progress is carefully monitored. In most cases marks and grades are regularly given; while in others different ways have been developed to ensure that students are given regular feedback on their progress.
All students work with tutors who help to monitor their progress with them. At regular intervals, students complete reviews of their work and these are then discussed during one-to-one meetings with their tutors.
For the parents of our year 12 and year 13 students, there are regular meetings with tutors and teachers and detailed written reports of students' progress are sent home.
Because tutors know their students well, they are able to help them to prepare applications for further and higher education colleges and for employment. They can also write detailed and supportive references that help to ensure that their students are called for interviews.
The head of sixth form is Mrs S Wilson and the assistant head is Mr A Barker.
Queries in respect of curriculum matters
