What we are trying to achieve with students
We seek to promote excellence and enable all students, irrespective of their ability, ethnicity or gender, to achieve their potential by raising their self-esteem and promoting their personal development.
We encourage in our students a healthy lifestyle and an appreciation of the value of being active. By providing greater access for all students, including disadvantaged and disabled students, we encourage greater participation and promote sport for all our local community.
We also have special programmes to give elite performers the chance to achieve at the highest levels.
The courses we run
Key stage 4 PE
Pupils all start on GCSE PE in the September of Year 10 and then at Christmas remain on GCSE PE or take our leadership route, which is Junior Sports Leaders Award.
GCSE PE : We cover the Edexcel examination full course. This involves pupils being marked on 4 practical sports ( worth 60%) and then sit a final paper at the end of May in Year 11 which is worth 40 %.
Junior Sports Leaders award ( JSLA) : This tries to enable pupils to develop their leadership skills which has an advantage in many walks of life. Pupils will work with primary school pupils and coach them sports.
Btec Sport: ( 2 GCSE's) : Pupils complete a 3 hour course a week and work to achieve a Btec First certificate. Pupils complete 3 modules. It is 100% coursework.

What is a Specialist College?
A centre of excellence in the region, providing excellent facilities and opportunities for the pupils and staff that best suit their needs.
It raises the standard of teaching and learning and sets high, challenging targets for it’s staff and pupils to achieve.
The college builds on the school’s strengths and achieves a distinctive identity through its chosen specialism.
The Sports College benefits other schools in the area by sharing the expertise and facilities at its disposal.
A Sports College is part of the Government Specialist Schools Programme which develops specialist schools in areas such as sport, technology, arts and modern foreign languages. These subjects are growing all the time and now include mathematics and music.
Why did Great Baddow High School want to become a Specialist College?
Great Baddow is constantly seeking ways to improve – Sports College status represents a fantastic opportunity to improve and excel.
We want the best for our pupils within the school – this is an opportunity to provide the best facilities and opportunities for those pupils.
Sports College status provides Great Baddow with the opportunity to improve links with other schools and clubs in the area/region.
How does it benefit children at the school?
The funding available enables the college to provide significantly more resources and opportunities in a range of different areas that otherwise we may not be able to provide:
- Encourage all students to take GCSE in sport and PE
- A wide range of increased facilities to experiment with different sports
- More expertise in different/specialist areas/sports
- More staff available to coach
- Increased connection with the community and clubs
- Greater opportunities (Junior Sports Leadership courses, BTEC Sport, etc.
